The finals of all the championships were played on Sunday and Andrew Ni and Caroline Steedman held off their challengers with aplomb. Some excellent golf was played but in the end Caroline beat Fiona Ford and Andrew beat last year’s boys’ junior champion Stuart Thurlow. Some great golf was played and the players were supported by many members who turned out to watch – thanks to everyone who helped make this a memorable day.
In the men’s B championship Geoff Payne beat Colin MacLellan in a marathon match that went to the 37th hole.
Sofia Gonzales had revenge on Abby Steedman for her defeat last year in a re run of the Girls’ Championship match. Kerry Anderson beat Pam Townsend, a previous holder of the Ladies’ B trophy. In the Bronze match for the ladies Alison Murchie beat Wendy Cutter who has previously held the trophy.
Adam Hawthorne beat Arran Brierly Hastings in the Boys’ Championship and in the Senior Men’s Championship Roger Mew beat David Fell.
The Senior Ladies’ matches have yet to be played because so many qualifiers are involved in the A championship it was decided a few years ago to allow them to play their matches at a different time.
The course was in great condition given the effect of months of drying east winds and very little rain till the deluge the day before. However, the greens were running true and fast. Well done to Bill and the greenkeeping team for all their hard work in preparing the course.
Those of you who didn’t make it to the clubhouse for the presentation missed free wine and snacks so thanks to Rory and Norma and the rest of the team in the clubhouse for looking after us so well.
Thanks also to all the referees and caddies, and finally thanks to Jack and Jonnie and Laura for their support in the smooth running of the day. To quote a phrase, without you this would not have been possible !
